Sarah Michelle Gellar has recently reflected on female-led superhero movies, explaining how audiences do not accept women in the leading cast of Marvel movies. In a new interview with The Guardian , Sarah, who played a vampire slayer in Buffy series, said, “Genre is where women can really succeed and hold an audience.” The Cruel Intentions star continued, “Every time a Marvel movie tries to do a female cast, it just gets torn apart. “Unfortunately, audiences weren’t as accepting. In previous interview with Independent , Sarah revealed that she was being branded as “difficult” woman during early days of her career. “A lot of times on sets, you’re told not to make waves’, ‘You’re replaceable.’ And in Hollywood, and when you’re specifically a young female and you speak up about things, you’re labelled as ‘difficult’. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took a swipe at President Donald Trump and his immigration policies during his third inaugural address at Ellis Island, telling the crowd, "Never forget where you came from." "This is the harbor where Frederick Trump arrived from Germany, and whose grandson would become the president of the United States," Cuomo said in a speech on Tuesday, which officially kicked off his third and final term as governor. "This is not a faded memory of yesterday, but rather a shining beacon of tomorrow," Cuomo said of Ellis Island, the famed port of entry for immigrants for over a century. "Never forget where you came from, and never forget or deny this place." In addition to name-dropping Trump's grandfather, Cuomo added that ancestors of other notable public figures like Vice President Mike Pence and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also had ancestors who passed through Ellis Island. Sweden’s COVID-19 Strategist Says Lockdown ‘Obviously’ Would’ve Cut Deaths
Novel coronavirus cases continue to soar in Sweden, which now has more than 28,500 cases, including more than 3,500 deaths, as of Friday, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. Despite the country's high number of deaths per capita, compared with other countries in the Scandinavian region where lockdowns have been imposed, the chief epidemiologist of the Public Health Agency of Sweden, Dr. Anders Tegnell, who has been leading the country's COVID-19 response, has defended Sweden's controversial decision not to impose a lockdown. Speaking to Newsweek , Tegnell admitted that a lockdown would have helped reduce the number of cases and deaths in Sweden in the short term, but said the decision might pay dividends in the long run. "Obviously yes, it would have helped in the short term. But for the long term, we don't know," he said. But the country isn't likely to introduce a lockdown any time soon. "We are looking at what we will do in the summer. And we will … [Read more...] about Sweden’s COVID-19 Strategist Says Lockdown ‘Obviously’ Would’ve Cut Deaths
Chicago Teens Advocate For Gun Violence Awareness
Hadiya Pendleton would have turned 18 years old on June 2. Instead of celebrating, though, her friends on Tuesday are wearing orange to remember her and the dozens of Americans who die from gun violence each day. Pendleton, 15, an honor student in Chicago and a member of her high school's drill team, was killed in what police said was a mistaken identity, a week after she performed at President Barack Obama's second inauguration in January 2013. Her friends declared June 2 the first-ever National Gun Violence Awareness Day to honor her and the other victims and survivors of gun violence. Members of Congress, local leaders, activists and celebrities across the country wore orange on Tuesday. The color represents the uniform of hunters that keeps them and others safe from harm. Comedian Sarah Silverman, singer Michael Stipe, the label Motown Records and the New York Mets are among those who have joined the campaign. MTV changed its typical black and white icon to orange in … [Read more...] about Chicago Teens Advocate For Gun Violence Awareness
