Full-Bodied With Notes of Band-Aid and Medicine
This article was originally published by Knowable Magazine . Soon after the devastating Glass Fire sparked in California’s Napa Valley in September 2020, wine chemist Anita Oberholster’s inbox was brimming with hundreds of emails from panicked viticulturists. They wanted to know if they could harvest their grapes without a dreaded effect on their wine: the odious ashtray flavor known as smoke taint. Oberholster, of the University of California, Davis, could only tell them, “Maybe.” Industry laboratories were slammed with grape samples to test, with wait times of up to six weeks. Growers didn’t know whether it was worth harvesting their crops. About 8 percent of California wine grapes in 2020 were left to rot. Winemakers are no strangers to the vicissitudes wrought by climate change . Warmer temperatures have been a boon to some in traditionally cooler regions who are rejoicing over riper berries—but devastating to others. Scorching heat waves, wildfires , and other … [Read more...] about Full-Bodied With Notes of Band-Aid and Medicine
Abortion pill: “Lift restrictions” on mifepristone petition builds momentum
A petition calling for the lifting of restrictions on abortion medication is gaining momentum after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Medication abortion has been available in the U.S. since 2000, when the FDA approved the use of mifepristone for use in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. It involves taking mifepristone, waiting 24 to 48 hours, and then taking misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is essential to sustain a pregnancy, while misoprostol empties the uterus by causing cramping and bleeding. Medication abortion is expected to become a new battleground after the high court struck down Roe, with Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday warning that states cannot ban mifepristone based on disagreement with the FDA about its safety and efficacy. With Roe 's fall expected to lead to abortion being banned in about half the states, a petition launched by Allison Fine, the former chair of the national board of NARAL: … [Read more...] about Abortion pill: “Lift restrictions” on mifepristone petition builds momentum

MARGARET BRENNAN: California congressman Pete Aguilar is a member of the January 6 Select Committee and he joins us from New York. Good morning to you, Congressman. REP. PETE AGUILAR: Good morning, Margaret. MARGARET BRENNAN: We also heard sworn testimony that the former president spoke to the Justice Department and Homeland Security about seizing voting machines. These are outrageous ideas. But- but how far did this actually get? REP. AGUILAR: Well, I think what the- the testimony, and- and what we have laid out clearly indicates that the President, you know, knew he lost the election. Kiwi Carlos Ulberg in commanding win over Tafon Nchukwi at UFC Vegas 57
Kiwi UFC fighter Carlos Ulberg has scored a commanding knockout win at UFC Vegas 57. The 31-year-old light heavyweight fighter needed a mere 75 seconds to see off Cameroon’s Tafon Nchukwi on Sunday (NZ time), as he continues to impress early in his MMA career. In what was just his third UFC outing, Ulberg, who went into the bout as an underdog, caught Nchukwi with a strong left hook a little over a minute into the first round. After stumbling backwards, a stunned Nchukwi then copped a flurry of punches from Ulberg, who finished things in brutal style, as his City Kickboxing mates, including Israel Adesanya, and Brad Riddell, celebrated wildly cage-side.
