An Amtrak train carrying members of Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, collided with a large garbage truck Wednesday morning in an accident that resulted in at least one fatality and one person critically injured. “There is one confirmed fatality and one serious injury,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. “There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.” Ryan and other congressional members, their spouses and staffers were heading for a legislative retreat at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, CNN reports, when the train collided with a large garbage truck. “An aide confirmed Ryan was on the train and is fine. KARACHI: Residents in Karachi are protesting against the addition of the Karachi Municipal Corporation's (KMC) tax to K-Electric’s (KE) bills. The protests erupted after the KMC, a day ago, came under fire for authorising the KE to collect municipal charges from the people of Karachi through their power bills. Various political parties have rejected the Sindh government and KMC’s move, calling it an effort to fleece Karachi’s people. The KMC tax to consumers’ monthly electricity bills was added this month, which triggered anger among citizens — who are now demanding KE also pick up their garbage. Residents from different areas in the port city are complaining about trash in their areas by calling on KE’s helpline 118 and visiting their complaint centres. The campaign, protesting against the tax, has garnered traction on social media with a particular video doing the rounds where a consumer is seen dumping trash on KE’s vehicle and demanding for the power supply … [Read more...] about VIDEO: Furious citizen dumps garbage in KE vehicle after addition of KMC tax in power bill
Want to know the damage environmentalists can wreak on an area? T he world’s most famous collection of African art arrived in Britain after a spectacular act of colonial violence. In February 1897, an expeditionary force of 1,200 British soldiers and African auxiliaries crossed the moats and ancient mud walls around the city of Benin, in what is today southern Nigeria. Against defenders armed with swords and muskets, the British-led force deployed machine guns and mobile artillery. Hundreds of Benin residents likely lost their lives. The British drove into exile—and would later capture—Benin’s oba, or king, a man of semi-deified status known to history by his regnal name, Oba Ovonramwen. They looted the royal compound and packed the most beautiful contents into crates to ship home. Then a fire ignited, perhaps accidentally, perhaps not. Shrines, storehouses, the homes and burial places of past obas—all were destroyed. Most of the spoils were auctioned off in London. The artworks of carved ivory and cast metal were immediately acclaimed as … [Read more...] about Who Do the Benin Bronzes Belong To?
