An upcoming reboot of a TV classic resurfaces the issue of how ageing in women is portrayed in 2021, and as Virginia Fallon discovers, it’s much more than skin deep. Assigned to write a story about ageing women, I set out to find them. “Want to speak to me about how it feels?” I asked every friend I thought might fit the bill. Surprisingly, nobody was forthcoming, though they all recommended other women I should approach. So I did, and the response was the same. With nobody to interview, I sat at my window typing out this story then paused, cocked my head, and took in my reflection in the smeary glass. R odeo Van Bladel started getting that feeling again. The scrawny, balding clerk at window 7 of the California Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV ) in Santa Rosa had punched Rodeo’s driver’s licence number into a computer, before telling him to wait while he went to check on something. Rodeo had taken two cross-town buses to get in line early for the office’s opening at 8am, an hour-plus commute that would have taken ten minutes by car. He had come hoping that somebody could tell him, finally, when he would be allowed to get back to driving. The delay was a bad sign. The clerk returned with a co-worker, who handed Rodeo a slip of paper with a phone number. Rodeo had to call the Mandatory Actions Unit, she said, a division of the DMV apparently reachable only by phone. Cats are much-loved family members, but owners should always remember felines have very specific dietary needs. As the holidays approach there will be more candy and alcohol in our homes than usual. While humans may love our sweet treats and the odd tipple, it may not be wise to share these with our furry friends. Debra Zoran, Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M University, believes "feline diets are a lot different than human diets." So, can cats eat chocolate or raisins, and is alcohol toxic to your pet ? Newsweek asked the experts. Zoran told Newsweek : "In the wild, cats usually prey on small animals, such as mice and birds. But as a pet, a cat might only be preying on a can or bowl of cat food." As a result, she believes it is vital for cat owners to mimic the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet their cat would naturally eat in the wild. Zoran added: "People would like nutritional advice to be easy ... 'do this, feed that' or make specific diet/brand … [Read more...] about All the foods your cat can (and can’t) eat — from chocolate to raisins
A fossil once thought to be a snake with four legs, connecting lizards and early snakes, is not the missing link scientists had hoped for. Published in the Journal of Systematic Paleontology , a study led by paleontologist Michael Caldwell of the University of Alberta disputed the findings of a team of researchers that reported their discovery of what they believed was the first known example of a four-legged snake fossil. They dubbed it Tetrapodophis amplectus in their study published in the journal Science in 2015. "It has long been understood that snakes are members of a lineage of four-legged vertebrates that, as a result of evolutionary specializations, lost their limbs," said Caldwell. "It has thus long been predicted that a snake with four legs would be found as a fossil." The researchers in the original study estimated that T. amplectus was about 10 inches long. "If correctly interpreted based on the preserved anatomy, this would be a very important … [Read more...] about Four-legged snake fossil a fake, scientists say
