A four-year property dispute between brothers was a big factor in a Levin man’s 24-hour standoff with armed police. Police are still considering whether Paul Kenneth Smith, 62, will be charged after he barricaded himself inside his Bledisloe St home on Thursday, with indications he had weapons. Armed police and emergency blocked off streets and evacuated 80 residents, while a negotiation team was brought in. Police described it as a self-harm incident. A fire broke out in the house on Friday night and Smith was taken to Palmerston North Hospital. The cause of the blaze is yet to be confirmed. Manly legend Graham Lowe believes the NRL club needs a "big stick" and a "good dose of Ken Arthurson" to remedy the cultural problems engulfing the scandal-plagued club. The comments come as rookie Manase Fainu engaged the lawyer who acted on behalf of Sydney balcony killer Simon Gittany after being charged with filming a sex act with a woman without her consent. Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that Fainu appeared in a Sydney court in May, but did not enter a plea. He was granted bail to appear in the Fairfield Local Court on August 7. On May 24, 19 children and two adults were killed and 16 injured in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. A 2018 attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, left 17 dead. In 2012, a gunman shot and killed 26 people as young as 6 years old at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. It should not surprise anyone that school districts are re-evaluating their active-shooter response training and police departments across the country have ramped up efforts to educate children on what to do in the event they are in a situation with an active shooter. That includes the Lafayette Police Department, which recently held an active shooter presentation for children attending the SMILE/Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Summer Athletic Leadership Academy held at Domingue, Heymann and Comeaux recreation centers this summer. “We do these drills in the school systems, but this is the first time that I have spoken at this particular … [Read more...] about Lafayette Police take extra steps to make sure kids know how to respond to a shooter on campus
