Triumph and tragedy: The stories of Haldon Station
A book about Haldon Station tells more than just the history of another high country run in the Mackenzie – it is also a story of pioneers, their innovation, courage, and fortitude, living through two world wars, market crashes, rabbit plagues, droughts and loss. Rachael Comer reports. The sense of history was so strong at Haldon Station, when Mary Hobbs first visited it she said she could almost feel the stories of the past etched into the walls of the old buildings. For 165 years the station has been a place successive generations of New Zealanders have called home. Haldon Station in the Mackenzie, has a boundary adjacent to the eastern side of Lake Benmore, and extends up to the Kirkliston Range, and is 69.6 kilometres from Fairlie and 55.8km from Takapō/Tekapo. Expectations negative as views of economy, finances worsen — CBS News poll
Americans' assessments and outlook for the economy are poor, with most anticipating at least a slowdown, if not a recession, in the coming year. On a personal level, views on their own finances are down from a year ago, and many voice concern about the ability to afford things, or to save, going forward. It's an important sentiment because Americans' views on spending can in turn impact the economy. On a brighter note, however, feelings about job security remain relatively more confident by comparison. Current assessments of the national economy are getting worse. Just 22% think it's good — down even further from 26% in May — while the percentage saying it's "bad" has gone up to 75% — a new high for the Biden presidency. That is a 12-point rise since April. Majorities of Republicans, independents, and Democrats all rate the economy as bad. The 60% of Democrats who rate the economy bad is notable because it's moving closer to the views of independents and Republicans, even though a … [Read more...] about Expectations negative as views of economy, finances worsen — CBS News poll
CBS News poll: Half say Trump tried to stay in office through illegal means, should be charged with crimes
Most Americans continue to feel U.S. democracy is threatened, and the Jan. 6 hearings offer a window into their different reasons why. From what they've seen of the hearings thus far, half the country thinks former President Donald Trump planned to remain in office through unconstitutional and illegal activities. Half think that he should, in turn, be charged with crimes, and that the attack on the Capitol was an "insurrection." Meanwhile, though, most Republicans feel Trump had no such plans, and a big, unmoved majority of them still say President Joe Biden didn't legitimately win. Half of Republicans still call that day's events "patriotism," a view that's floated around the same mark since that day. The hearings haven't changed how people describe the day's events, compared to the way they did immediately afterward or a year later. That may be in part due to locked-in partisanship, and (relatedly) that not everyone is paying a lot of attention, including a big partisan … [Read more...] about CBS News poll: Half say Trump tried to stay in office through illegal means, should be charged with crimes
