At-home genetic tests are changing how patients interact with their doctors

Swabbing your cheeks and spitting into vials can open up a whole new world. Send off your samples to a genetic testing company like Ancestry, and you can learn where your forebears came from. But the industry that began by telling people which countries their ancestors inhabited has veered into the realm of medicine—some genetic testing companies can also tell if you're carrying genes that have been linked to serious diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Yet as scientists continue to puzzle out our DNA and the world becomes increasingly digital, private genetic-testing companies will play a tricky role in health care, blurring the lines between being a patient and being a consumer. Unlike finding out that you share blood with people from an unexpected nation, a list of potentially dangerous DNA mutations isn't the sort of information people keep to themselves. The results of private genetic tests are already starting to leak from living rooms and into the clinical … [Read more...] about At-home genetic tests are changing how patients interact with their doctors

What’s in Democrats’ health care, climate and tax bill that passed the Senate?

Washington — More than a year after President Biden unveiled his sweeping domestic spending plan, the Senate on Sunday approved a more narrow $740 billion package that aims to tackle health care costs, tax large corporations and make historic investments in combating climate change. The plan, called the Inflation Reduction Act, passed the upper chamber along party lines, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. Democrats used a legislative process called budget reconciliation to pass the measure amid unanimous opposition from Republicans. The House is set to briefly return to Washington from its summer recess Friday to take up the package, and is expected to send the bill to Mr. Biden's desk for his signature. Approval of the legislation by the 50-50 Senate capped a months-long fight over the president's domestic policy priorities, with negotiations coming in fits and starts as Sen. Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, expressed … [Read more...] about What’s in Democrats’ health care, climate and tax bill that passed the Senate?

Dem Senator Suggests Adding 87,000 New IRS Agents Will Give American Taxpayers ‘Better Service’ | The Daily Wire

With Senate Democrats passing the $740 billion “Inflation Reduction Act” Sunday, Americans might see an extra 87,000 new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents providing taxpayers with “better service,” according to one liberal lawmaker. Amid high inflation and a recession, U.S. Senators broke even on voting for the legislation. All 50 Democrat Senators supported, and all 50 Republicans rejected the act, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to break the tie vote. While the bill emphasizes spending toward climate and health packages — an extra $80 billion would primarily enhance IRS enforcement and operations while modernizing new technology systems. IRS enforcement aims to ramp up auditing the wealthy and impose a minimum tax on large corporations over the next decade. However, the number of new agents has working-class Americans concerned that they could see a tax hike, considering Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) once said raising taxes during a recession is wrong, Fox News … [Read more...] about Dem Senator Suggests Adding 87,000 New IRS Agents Will Give American Taxpayers ‘Better Service’ | The Daily Wire

Biden boosts legacy with energy, health care bill. Will voters reward him?

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

One month ago, the heart of President Joe Biden 's domestic agenda was on life support, and his job approval rating had dropped to a new low. Biden and his party appeared headed for a shellacking in the midterm elections. Even Democratic voters seemed ready to move on from the president, openly questioning whether he should seek a second term. But seemingly overnight, in an unexpected turn of events, Biden has regained some momentum following what has been the most productive period of his presidency. In a rare flurry of bipartisan activity over the past six weeks, Congress passed the most significant gun control regulation in three decades and made a major investment in U.S. manufacturing to counter competition from China. And on Sunday, Senate Democrats approved an energy, tax and health care package on a party-line vote, delivering on a number of longtime Democratic priorities. The House is expected to vote on the bill Friday. Still, the president's approval rating … [Read more...] about Biden boosts legacy with energy, health care bill. Will voters reward him?
