Strong winds and heavy downpours will sweep across New Zealand this weekend, with gales of up to 120kmh and 100 millimetres of rain forecast for some regions. MetService meteorologist Angus Hines said large parts of the nation would be affected by adverse wind and rain conditions between now and the end of the weekend. Christchurch reached 27 degrees Celsius, while Timaru in South Canterbury (which has a different regional holiday) reached 30.4C. Heavy rain warnings have been issued for the West Coast of the South Island from Friday until noon on Sunday, the Tararua Range north of Wellington on the North Island from 2am to 8pm on Saturday, and in the eastern ranges of the Bay of Plenty from 9am to midnight on Saturday. JOHN BISSET/STUFF Residents clean up after hIgh winds cause power cuts and damage across South Canterbury Spring winds. You’re so over it. They flatten your fence, send your rubbish bin on a tour of the neighbourhood, snap your plants, whip off with the newspaper, pulverise petals and make outside recreation hell on earth, with bad hair blown in. If you’re going insane with being battered by the breeze, you’re not alone. Even if you don’t have an oak tree through your ceiling, spring winds can still mess with your nerves and your mental health. New Zealand is one of the windiest countries. It doesn’t have as many extreme weather events as some, but wind is a constant, thanks to a mid-ocean location in the Roaring Forties wind band. Wind can drive you nuts, overseas researchers have found. A 2008 German study found temperature, wind, sunlight and length of days had an effect on negative moods, but little effect on positive moods. R odeo Van Bladel started getting that feeling again. The scrawny, balding clerk at window 7 of the California Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV ) in Santa Rosa had punched Rodeo’s driver’s licence number into a computer, before telling him to wait while he went to check on something. Rodeo had taken two cross-town buses to get in line early for the office’s opening at 8am, an hour-plus commute that would have taken ten minutes by car. He had come hoping that somebody could tell him, finally, when he would be allowed to get back to driving. The delay was a bad sign. The clerk returned with a co-worker, who handed Rodeo a slip of paper with a phone number. Rodeo had to call the Mandatory Actions Unit, she said, a division of the DMV apparently reachable only by phone.
