A young Saudi woman has fled from her family and is seeking asylum, fearing for her life after she denounced Islam. "My life is in danger. My family threatens to kill me for the most trivial things," the young woman, identified as 18-year-old Rahaf al-Qunun, told Reuters on Sunday. Al-Qunun was stopped at the airport in Thailand after escaping from her family during a trip to Kuwait. She was en route to Australia to seek asylum but was reportedly stopped by Saudi and Kuwaiti officials when she arrived for a layover in Bangkok. According to Al-Qunun, they forcibly confiscated her passport and she was threatened with deportation. "My brothers and family and the Saudi embassy will be waiting for me in Kuwait," she warned in her comments to Reuters. "They will kill me," she added. Although Thai immigration officials initially attempted to return the young women to her family in the Middle East, they have since vowed to allow her to stay. "She is now under the sovereignty of … [Read more...] about “My family threatens to kill me,” asylum-seeking Saudi woman says after denouncing Islam

Violent woman on open-ended jail term ‘not being treated with respect’

August 7, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz Leave a Comment

The only woman so far sentenced to the open-ended jail term of preventive detention has complained that some prison staff don’t show her respect. “She does tend to blame staff for her behaviour and identified to us on the board today that there are a small number of staff that she feels do not act in a respectful way toward her,” the latest Parole Board decision on her case said. Kino Hoki Matete could be abusive or threatening to staff when she was frustrated because things did not go her way or she felt disrespected, the board said. In 2006, Matete became the first woman to be sentenced to preventive detention and the Department of Corrections, Ara Poutama Aotearoa, confirmed on Monday she remains the only one. Ex-Celebration Church members believe ‘deliverance’ harmed them

August 2, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz Leave a Comment

A former Celebration member believes deliverance – the Pentecostal equivalent of exorcism – has been used to replace counselling, medical care, and even law enforcement at the controversial church. Others say the experience of having a demon 'cast out' made them physically ill or left them psychologically damaged. She remembers him telling the congregation there was a demon inside her. That her cheeks burned red as he shouted in tongues into the microphone, speakers booming his voice to hundreds of followers in the auditorium. Beneath the stage lights, his spit spattered her face. Megan* has uncomfortable memories of him grabbing her head tightly and ordering the demon to "be gone". Church leaders circled her, with raised hands, praying for the crying, shaking girl to be 'saved'. She felt hot and dizzy. She was eight. Searchlight Pictures Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack star in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. "Everyone just looked angry," says Emma Thompson, grimacing and gritting her teeth. She's describing the movies featuring sex scenes that she watched as a teenager. "Everyone looked just sort of cross, and just sort of enraged by the whole thing," she continued. "I just thought, 'Is that what sex is supposed to be like? I don't understand’. Good grief, we have a long way to go." Thompson considers her new movie, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (which opens in select cinemas nationwide in New Zealand on August 18, although there are previews from August 10), at least "a step in the [right] direction”. She plays Nancy Stokes, a widow and retired teacher who hires a sex worker named Leo Grande (newcomer Daryl McCormack) to help break her out of a lifetime of sexual repression. Over the course of four meetings in an anonymous-looking hotel room, the two embark on an unlikely ally-ship, … [Read more...] about Good Luck To You, Leo Grande: Why Emma Thompson wants us to like our bodies

‘I Just Want Change’: Outspoken Lia Thomas Competitor Slams Leftist Media For Ignoring Her Story | The Daily Wire

Riley Gaines does not think her message is partisan: she is “pro-woman,” “pro-fairness” and wants biological men to stay out of women’s sports. But thus far, she shared with The Daily Wire, only conservative media have shown interest in her story. This weekend at the Conservative Political Action Conference she was elevated by her most high profile supporter yet — former President Donald Trump, who invited her to join him on stage, praised her courage, and gave her a few moments to speak to the crowd. Gaines, a 12-time All-American and three-time Southeastern Conference champion who raced against transgender athlete Lia Thomas in the NCAA championships this spring, told The Daily Wire that “it feels amazing” to have someone as powerful as Trump speak up in defense of women’s sports. “Clearly what we have in office now is doing the exact opposite,” she added, referring to President Joe Biden’s administration, “and turning their back on women.” Photo courtesy of Riley Gaines. … [Read more...] about ‘I Just Want Change’: Outspoken Lia Thomas Competitor Slams Leftist Media For Ignoring Her Story | The Daily Wire
