How Crypto Disappeared Into Thin Air

May 20, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com Leave a Comment

Carnage in the cryptocurrency market is nothing new. Over the past decade, even as the value of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether has risen sharply, crashes have been a regular feature of the market. (There’s a reason HODL—“Hold on for dear life”—is a mantra among crypto believers.) But even by crypto standards, the destruction of value over the past six months—and in particular, over the past few weeks —has been staggering. Since November, something like $1.5 trillion in cryptocurrency value has been erased . Bitcoin and Ethereum, the market’s bellwethers, are both down about 60 percent from their peaks. And most strikingly, the so-called stablecoin Terra and its sister token, Luna, which together were valued at about $60 billion six weeks ago, imploded in a matter of days and are now essentially worthless. This huge sell-off of course raises a natural question: What happened? You can certainly point to potential culprits. Inflation and interest rates are rising … [Read more...] about How Crypto Disappeared Into Thin Air

How the “Arrow” series finale may set up HBO Max’s “Green Lantern” TV series

While The CW was saying goodbye to one superhero in the Arrow series finale Tuesday night, it may have been saying hello to another as the show seemed to tease that the Arrowverse is getting its version of the Green Lantern character. Streaming service HBO Max is currently developing a Green Lantern TV series, leading some to speculate that there will be a crossover between the Earth-12 Green Lantern Corps in the new series and the Arrowverse on Earth Prime. In Arrow Season 6, Episode 10, John Diggle (played by David Ramsey) was knocked down after a box crashed down from space and landed very close to him. Opening the box, it bathed Diggle in a green glow. We did not see what was in the box, but fans are speculating that the box is the perfect size to contain a certain all-powerful ring. The Arrow showrunners have not confirmed the box contains Green Lantern's ring, but seeing as the signature jewelry is up there with Aquaman's trident, Wonder Woman's lasso of truth … [Read more...] about How the “Arrow” series finale may set up HBO Max’s “Green Lantern” TV series

THIBODAUX — Early Thursday morning, Myles Brennan hopped on the road for a drive to the Nicholls State campus for the annual Manning Passing Academy. Brennan, one of the 45 college quarterbacks working as counselors at the camp, was greeted with a surprise when he arrived at his room. His roommates were Sean Clifford, Penn State’s signal caller, and Max Johnson, the favorite to lead Texas A&M’s offense in the fall. Yes, that Max Johnson. The quarterback who played with Brennan at LSU for two years. The one who began his freshman season two spots behind Brennan on the depth chart. The one who supplanted the backup, TJ Finley, for the last two games of that year after Brennan was injured in the third game of the season. The passer who then competed with Brennan for the starting LSU gig the next year and won by default after Brennan broke his arm in a fishing accident. That Max Johnson, whose presence at LSU forced Brennan into the transfer portal, and later, whose own … [Read more...] about At Manning Passing Academy, former LSU QB Max Johnson discusses move to Texas A&M

‘I Lost Friends’: Former Rolling Stone Journalist Talks Reaction To Him Reviewing ‘What Is A Woman’ | The Daily Wire

Old-school liberal investigative journalist Matt Taibbi told Ben Shapiro on this week’s episode of “ Sunday Special ” that he “lost friends” for merely reviewing Matt Walsh and The Daily Wire’s groundbreaking documentary, “ What is a Woman? ” Taibbi was a star writer at “Rolling Stone” magazine and beloved by the elite liberal media, but as the Left radicalized, and Taibbi stayed the same, the journalist found himself in a new space. Like, for example, sitting down for a lengthy conversation with one of the most prominent conservative figures in American politics — and seeing a lot of agreement. “The response was unbelievable, just for reviewing the movie — forget about what I said about it,” Taibbi told Shapiro about his review . “I lost friends over that. There were people who I’ve known for decades who basically said I’m a transphobe and I’m … out of their loop.” Taibbi explained that he first noticed an unwillingness from the Left even to discuss the transgender … [Read more...] about ‘I Lost Friends’: Former Rolling Stone Journalist Talks Reaction To Him Reviewing ‘What Is A Woman’ | The Daily Wire

It Is Silly Season in the Land of Cryptocurrency

January 10, 2018 by www.theatlantic.com Leave a Comment

In October, the Colorado biotech company Bioptix changed its name to Riot Blockchain. The company’s valuation doubled within a few days. This might strike you as an extraordinarily bizarre story. But even more bizarrely, it’s becoming ordinary. Weeks later, the British company Online PLC changed its name to Online Blockchain. The company’s shares jumped 400 percent. In December, the Long Island Iced Tea Corporation—which, as you might expect, sold iced tea—rebranded itself Long Blockchain. The company’s shares promptly rose nearly 300 percent. On Tuesday this week, the legacy photography company Kodak announced the launch of KODAKCoin, a “photo-centric cryptocurrency to empower photographers and agencies to take greater control in image rights management.” The stock rose 80 percent in a matter of hours. It is officially silly season in the land of cryptocurrency. To borrow a reference from the show Portlandia , this is the “put a bird on it” stage of crypto, where … [Read more...] about It Is Silly Season in the Land of Cryptocurrency
